Fred J. DeHaas, 68, of Bellefonte passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at home with his family after a short brave battle with brain cancer. He was born in Bellefonte on May 5, 1953, the son of the late
Joseph and Kathleen Campbell DeHaas. On December 22, 2001 he married his best friend, the former Judy Hill, who survives at home. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth Keeler, Edna
Hoffman; two sons, Joshua (Chelsea) DeHaas, Brandon (April) DeHaas; one daughter, Larijo Owens and two step-children, Elaine Cline and Chris (Alice) Hinton. Fred is also survived by his two granddaughters,
three grandsons, three step-grandsons, three step-granddaughters, four step-great grandsons and two step-great granddaughters. In addition to his parents Fred was preceded in death by three brothers, Larry, Ken and Ron DeHaas, one sister, Margie Schindler, two step daughters, Nikki Ridenour and Angela Crater and two step-great grandsons, Silas and Milo Cline.
Fred was proud of his Army service in the 40th Transportation Company in Bremerhaven, Germany. He enjoyed reading about history, day trips to flea markets, searching for old Diners and harassing the waitresses at Perkins. But most important to him was his family. He retired as a CO from PA Dept. of Corrections after 23 years. He later retired after 5 years of driving truck #174 for GOH.
Family and friends will be received at the Dean K. Wetzler Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Inc., Milesburg on Monday, May 24, 2021 from 5-7 PM with a funeral service to follow with Pastor John Pavlica officiating. Military honors will be accorded at the funeral home. We will be following CDC recommendations, facial coverings will be required and social distancing is encouraged. Memorial contributions may be made to Pets Come First, 2451 General Potter Highway, Centre Hall, PA 16828 in memory of Fred J. DeHaas.
