Howard ""Cal"" Woodring
Howard Calvin “Cal” Woodring passed away peacefully and at home on June 14, 2018. Home now, his legacy will continue in perpetuity. Cal was born June 27, 1924 in Port Matilda, PA on his grandparents farm. He was the second child of ten and surviving siblings are: John Woodring (Molly), Edith Richards (David), Mary Klinger (Roy) and Donna Stewart (Robert). Cal was predeceased by Ruth Woodring, Homer Woodring (Marian), Ethel Dreibelbis (Charles), Elsie Stine (Art), and Esther Woodring. Cal was also predeceased by parents, Howard and Erdie Mae Thompson Woodring.
On July 3, 1950, he married his “southern sweetheart”, Betty B. beginning a nearly 68-year long love affair. His enduring love for Betty continued until his death. Together they had three daughters, Rebecca Staus (Ralph), N. Susan Woodring (Dave Pellerano) and Amy Carson (Harry). There are twelve grandchildren and thirty-four great grandchildren (with one more on the way). Cal was loved by his family for his quiet but strong leadership by example. He was truly a gentle man, strong in his faith and staunch in his beliefs.
Cal graduated from Port Matilda High School and entered the United States Air Force serving during WWII and discharged with the rank of Captain. Cal continued his love of flying for 55 years until the age of 85. In his youth, Cal played baseball and held a county record for most bases stolen (7) in one game. A construction engineer with PennDOT, Cal retired in 1986. As a member of the Centre County Grange, Cal served as Master, Pomona Master and State Deputy and was for many years president of Centre County Mutual Insurance Company.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks for the very fine help and care from Dr. Osterling and his staff, Hospice, Ferguson Township Police, Life Link and so many others who assisted the family with the care of Cal. The many kindnesses by others is greatly appreciate by the family. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Faith United Methodist Church, 512 Hughes Street, Bellefonte, PA 16823, on July 28, 2018 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Andrew Morgan officiating and visitation with family at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a gift may be made in Cal’s honor to the Summer Lunch Program or Camp Scholarship Fund at Martha United Methodist Church, 194 Ardery Hollow Road, Port Matilda, PA 16870.
